Remembering With Love: A Memorial Day Reflection From A Widow, Mom, And Veteran

Today the flags wave high, grills spark to life, and the country pauses to honor our fallen heroes. But for many of us, Memorial Day isn’t just a national ritual, it’s personal. It lives in our bones, in our households, and in the quiet spaces memorial day grief refuses to leave.

When Memorial Day Becomes Personal

I wear many titles; Veteran. Widow. Mother. Each of them gives this day a different weight. I’ve served alongside brave men and women whose names are now etched on marble instead of folded inside deployment orders. I loved a man who gave everything he had for his country, and whose sacrifice echoed long after his boots left the battlefield. I’m raising children who know their father as both a hero and a hole, someone to be proud of and someone they will always miss.

Memorial Day isn’t just backyard barbecue and a day off from work. For some of us, it’s a soft place of remembrance and a sharp ache of absence. Families just like mine carry the reality of service on days when no one is watching. We feel it not just today, but every day we stare at an empty seat at the table.

Honoring The Fallen, Holding The Living

This day reminds me of the true cost of service. It reminds me that grief doesn’t end when the final salute does. It follows you home, folds itself into everyday life and asks you to keep carrying what you never wanted to hold.

But Memorial Day also reminds me of our power, the power of resilience that shows up in the women who tuck grieving children into bed…in the widows who rebuild their lives with shaking hands… and in the children who carry a hero’s last name like a badge of courage.

What I'm Choosing To Remember Today

• My husband, whose bravery continues to guide me long after his final breath

•The friends we’ve lost, whose laughter and sacrifice will never be forgotten

•Every spouse, parent, and child who holds this same heavy heart

•The truth that grief and gratitude can absolutely coexist

We do not have to choose between heartbreak and hope. We can carry both. We can remember the past and continue building a future in their honor.

For Anyone Feeling Heavy Today

If this day feels tender, you are not alone. Pause. Breathe. Remember. Your strength, even if it looks like surviving, not thriving, is a legacy all its own. What you carry, what you endure, and how you continue to live with love… that, too, is service.
